360 Photography – Compare Frame Rates

Customers ask from time to time about the differences in frame rate and how that changes the cost of 360 product photography. On this page you can view a single product that has been shot at different shots per rotation to illustrate the difference in frame rate.

With it being one single product, and not different products, it helps to showcase the difference.

The 144 Frame example spins slow and smooth, while still letting the user rotate the item with their mouse or finger, but the file size is larger and takes additional time to download. The rotation is smooth enough to have a gentle rotation that you can use in video as well.

The 72 Frame example still has the smooth rotation but is half the file size of the 144. While it is smaller than the 144, it is still a large payload to download, and can cause issues on page speed. This rotation can be used in video, but at the video frame rate, it will spin twice as fast as the 144-example.

The 36 Frame example starts to jump from frame to frame, but it loads very quickly. It is a good balance between speed and functionality. While it is possible to use this example in video, the product will rotate once a second at the standard video frame rate.

The 24 Frame example loads almost instantly, but you can see a noticeable difference between its frames. A 24-frame rotation is not recommended to use in video, it just doesn’t have enough frames to make an enjoyable rotation.

Another option is that you can have the product shot in 144 frames and then export out the desired final files based on their use. In the short run, the cost is higher to have the product shot in 144 frames, but the source material can be used for multiple applications and the ROI is higher.
